To be honest, the first week was much of a blur to me. We arrived at Children's Hopsital Los Angeles' emergency room around 8:00 pm on Friday night. It was my baby girl's first time receiving an IV and it was not easy because it took a few tries for them to find a vein. Though she had her blood drawn a few hours prior, being in the E.R. consisted of them having to do their own blood testing and poking at her some more. After many hours of waiting for the results of the blood test, we finally got an answer. Just like Dr. Wu was concerned about, her direct bilirubin levels were very high. Which is when they had decided they would admit us into the hospital, 1:00 am August 11, 2012.
Saturday, August 11, 2012 consisted of waiting because it was the weekend and the GI team was not in. Though, they did confirm with us that they were going to do an ultrasound Sunday.
Sunday, August 12, 2012 after going through the night NPO, which meant not being able to feed her because they needed her to be on an empty stomach. She was able to get her ultrasound done that morning at 9:30 am. 11:40 am, her IV on her hand went bad which she then had to get one on her leg.
Monday, August 13, 2012 Faye was NPO for her liver biopsy. She was out by 1:45 pm and was doing great.
Tuesday, August 14, 2012 I was in the hospital by myself for the first time since Henry had to go back to work. But it was great because my baby was just her usual happy little girl! Still today consisted of waiting for the results of her liver biopsy. Still with all the hope in me, I was praying it would something curable. The GI doctor came in to tell me the preliminary results showed that she has Biliary Atresia and preliminary results were 90% of what the final report would say. So from there, the surgery team wanted to get a HIDA scan and scheduled it for the next day. But someone was misinformed and another surgeon had to tell us that the HIDA scan would need to be postponed till the 19th beause she was required to take a medication for 5 consecutive days. This was a blow to us, we just wanted Faye better and to be home again as a family with Leah.
Wednesday, August 15, 2012 12:20 pm Dr. Anselmo came in to tell us that her Kasai operation would be on Friday. I questioned everything at this point because the previous surgeon had told me that the HIDA scan would be like a "map" for the surgery. Dr. Anselmo told me upfront that the HIDA scan is only a "fuzzy map" and would do no justice because they know what they had to do next; the Kasai.
Sometime this week, we received the final results of the liver biopsy confirming Biliary Atresia 7:44 pm that night, we had a last minute notice that her surgery would be the next day, Thursday instead of Friday.
